Physical and Chemical Changes

Physical and Chemical Changes

Main information

Teacher: Miguel Tomás Rodas Oliva

Course/Level: 4º ESO

Subject: Physics & Chemistry

DU Title: Physical and chemical changes

Learning outcomes - Evaluation criteria

1. To understand the chemical reaction mechanism and to deduce the conservation of mass law based on the concept of the atomic rearrangement.

2. To recognise the amount of substance as a fundamental measure, and to recognise the mole as its unit in the International System of Units.

3. To perform stoichiometric calculations with pure reactants, starting from the adjustment of the corresponding chemical equation.

4. To identify acids and bases and to measure their strength using pH.

5. To understand and to appreciate the importance of synthesis, combustion and neutralisation reactions in biological processes, daily and industrial applications, as well as their environmental impact.

Contextual and cultural elements

This is suposed to be one of the most important topics of the course. Chemical reaction knowledge is the border between elementary science and advanced one. And dominating all this kind of reactions, equations and concepts in both L1 and L2 will give the students a huge power when they face future science degrees.

We have to take into account that Physics and Chemistry is an elective subject.

Cognitive (thinking) processes

Understand, relate, calculate, estimate, show results propperly

Tasks

  • Listen and understand the most basic concepts of the unit

  • Apply these concepts to actual exercises, by explaining or calculating

  • Show results both writing and speaking properly

Activities

  • Initial evaluation by simple concept digital test

  • Reading and speaking theory

  • Developing exercises by using L2

  • Explaining virtual pH experiments and showing and sharing results

Metodology

Organization and class distribution

The methodology will be active and participatory; in addition, it must facilitate both individual and group learning.

There won't be any difference between a normal distribution to this unit one. The speaking process will be taking part by showing the whole class their results at blackboard, or working in pairs, sharing vocabulary and expresions.

The unit is suposed to be 8 sessions long, adding an extra one that will be used as individual evaluation.

  • STEAM competences

  • Initiative and Entrepreneurship

  • Learning to Learn

Evaluation (Both criteria and instruments)

- Evaluation criteria

  • Understand the mechanism of a chemical reaction and deduce the law of conservation of mass from the concept of the atomic rearrangement that occurs in a chemical reaction. atomic rearrangement that takes place

  • Interpret equations thermochemical equations and distinguish between endothermic and exothermic and exothermic reactions

  • Recognise the quantity of substance as a fundamental and the mole as its unit in the International System of Units.

  • Carry out stoichiometric calculations with pure reactants assuming a complete yield of the reaction, starting from the adjustment of the corresponding chemical equation.

  • Identify acids and bases, know their chemical behaviour and measure their strength using indicators and the digital pH meter

- Evaluation instruments

Continuous assessment of each student with different oral and written test, every other week. At the end of the topic, the students will take a cumulative test.
