DU title: Food, eating a balanced diet.

Teacher: Pablo Contreras García

Subject: Nature Science

Course: 4º Course of Primary Education

DU title: Food, eating a balanced diet.

Development of lessons.

This didactic unit is composed of 5 different lessons, facing the main topic by several approaches in order to give different points of view to learners. The sequence will follow a progression from activation of previous ideas to the best way of learning acquisition at the end. I am going to use several digital tools and apps with a view to increase their motivation during these lessons.

1º Lesson: We will try to activate previous knowledge by means of questions overall. In this lesson, speaking is the main tool of communication, so this means that is going to be a really talkative session where they are going to lose their fear of talking in English. They are young learners and they don't know a lot about Healthy Life in their mother tongue. However, their brain is flexible and they will acquire any content easily if they feel themselves confident and enjoyable.

After questions, we can activate their previous knowledges taking pictures about Diet and habits, and we can collect all of them with the aim of making a Genially introduction. It is important to remember that we can include links inside of pictures, for that reason we can also include pictures, podcast or even videos adapted to their age and objectives. This presentation will include vocabulary and structures that maybe they knew earlier, but it will also include the following contents that are planned to be taught.

In addition, they will access to a KWL Chart where they are going to include what knew about Healthy life and diets below the K column. They need to develop their own autonomy and realise about what they knew and what they didn't know.

To finish with this lesson, we can make games of activation and presentation by means of :

- Wordwall where we can create our one activities like "Shooting the correct balloon".

  • Flippity where we can access to different kind of activities including the vocabulary and structures that we are interested on.
  • Educandy, which has the same functions to the apps mentioned above.

2º Lesson: We will begin our lessons activating and remembering the contents seen the last day and we will carry out a storytelling. I have chosen the story of "Lorax" which tells a story tale about how our world has changed in the future because nature has disappeared and human beings only follow bad diets and unhealthy habits. There's also a film based on this story and we have to bear that in mind due to we can use it if we feel that we will reach our objectives better with that material. It is important to use flashcards, puppets and gestures to ease the story to

our students.

Sometimes they can feel themselves lost, fo that reason we need to pay special attention to eye contact, gestures, speed, pronunciation, facial expressions and rhetorical questions. To reach the success in this lessons, we need to seat our students in the best shape possible to comply with these all elements. Nevertheless, sometimes this aspect is really difficult to comply because of our classroom, so we will try to change the shape of our class to an "U" distribution.

Finally, we need to check how much they have retained in their mind, so we will include a kahoot to check if they have understood the most important parts of the story. Furthermore, we can search a video on YouTube about habits and diets and we will edit it with the app EdPuzzle. This app allows us to include questions and information while they are watching the video. At the end, we will access to a graphic showing their answers in percents.

3º Lesson: As in every lessons, we will begin with activation of previous knowledge acquired in the last session. After that, we will divide our students among groups with the view to make a new end of our storytelling or just changing the development of it imaging that characters would be our relatives. Both activities are really funny to them because they use their imagination to produce a classwork. When we promote cooperative working, it is really important to establish all the rules that they need to respect like: sharing information, respecting our partners´ opinion, giving ideas, helping to our partners and not try to compete with the rest of the class. Besides, their production needs to include vocabulary and structures used along the story (there is, there are, pollution, oceans, nature, etc).  Every member of each group will have a function like writing, giving ideas, checking mistakes, searchers on dictionary or just controller. Our duty as teachers should be guiders, giving our opinion about what they are doing and clarifying doubts.

They must finish it before the end of the class, we will record them in order to upload the recording to soundcloud though. This website will be used to show them their production in terms of pronunciation. It is also really motivating when they watch themselves behind the screen talking either in English and about something that they didn't know before. Therefore, we will use those all recordings to produce a QR code which we will use it in the last lesson.

4º Lesson: This would be the last session to finish with this didactic unit. We will organise a workshop where they have to make their own card that would be titled: "Saving our healthy life: an adventure by students of year 4". The first step will be making our cards like a book, where we are going to include several things:

  • Wordcloud: This element will be a cloud composed of the most important words  and information of the topic like: There are 50 volcanos in the world, 5 oceans and 10 deserts. They will make this elements using our whiteboard.

  • Meaningful picture: This element would be provided by the teacher using the app Canva which offers a huge range of layouts easily to edit. Pupils will include 5 tips to keep our world safe.

  • QR: We will stick the QR code on the corner of the card in order to be scanned by their fathers at home. They will hear their children telling them the story chosen in the lesson 3.  The QR code is really easy to produce using websites like "QR Generator". Sometimes, websites allows us to generate a QR code related to it as a shortcut.

3º Materials in use

  1. Genially: Website where we can make presentation, activities or games depending on our intentions. We can introduce new vocabulary, we can refresh previous knowledge, we can assess the content os we can just do it for teaching.

  1. KWL Chart: Rubric which pupils use in order to reflect What they knew, What they Want to learn and What they have learnt.

  1. Wordwall - Flippity - Educandy: Websites where we can make activities and adapt them to our objectives and needs.

  1. Flashcards - puppets - gestures: Traditional resources very useful if we work with storytellings like during this Didactic Unit.

  1. Soundcloud: Website which allows us to record our students related to oral production. I use it to produce oral interaction and we can use it as a way of self-observation. It is meaningful when students can observe and hear their own oral production. You can train pronunciation.

  1. QR Code: It is a resource which can be scanned by our phones. I use it to include their production during the lessons. Students like when they can bring their effort to their homes and they can be praised by their parents.

  1. Wordcloud: Resource taken from AICLE course. It is really representative because you can collect all the vocabulary taught during lessons in order to make a summary.
