THE FEUDALISM
This unit belongs to the signature of Geography and History and has been planned for students of 2 ESO level. We are designed a unit where the objectives, the contents and the language communication are completely linked in order to create a coherent learning process where the use of the L2 language does not present difficulties for the students.
Objectives
Developing this unit we pretend that the students are able to reach the following objectives:
· To know the European political situation during the Early Middle Age
· To understand the feudal society
· To know the feudal structures
Contents
In order to reach the objectives planned we have structured the unit in these chapters
· Europe in middle age
· The feudal society
· The economy in the early middle age
Language communication
The planning of the unit has taken into account the use of a specific vocabulary and also the necessaries grammatical structures that the students will need use during the activities and the final task.
They will use exposition, description and dialogue discourse type and they will work the writing, reading, listening and speaking and social interaction competences.
Methodology.
For the achievement of the objectives and the competences we will use an interactive and motivating methodology where the use of new technologies plays an important role.
Task
At the end of the unit we have planned a final task where the students will create a video recording where they must interpret a journey in the Middle Age showing the main concepts learnt during the unit. In this activity they will work the digital, language and learning to learn competence.
Sessions planning
The unit is structured in 8 sessions, lasting 50 minutes each one:
· Session 1 : We will begin with a brain storming activity and the unit introduction. With the support of an image, we will ask the students the vocabulary that they know related with the feudalism. We will write these words on the blackboard and will debate about them.
To introduce the feudalism we will watch the following video.
· Session 2: With the support of the precedent video we will explain “The origin of feudalism, causes and consequences”. After that we will work with maps in order to help the students to place the feudalism in Europe and to understand in which countries it took place. It could be a great opportunity to practice the country vocabulary and also the dates.
· Session 3: The session 3 will be dedicated to explain the feudal society using the vocabulary showed in the session 1. We will also explain the steps that the students must follow in the final task, a web site directory will be delivery in order to help them in the information searching.
· Session 4 : This session is dedicated to show them the feudal structures. They will create a time line using the instructions of this web site. The instructions are in English therefore is a great opportunity to develop the learn to learn competence. We will also create during the unit an interactive glossary of terms, for that these flash cards will be a great tool.
· Session 5-7 : these session will be dedicated for the final task. The students will work in groups searching information and recording the video.
· Session 8: the final session will be the task presentation. The groups of students will watch the creation of their partners, they will evaluate the presentation with the help of a rubric.
Key competences
With the developing of the activities we are helping to reach the following competences:
ü Digital competence: working the activities and elaborating the final task.
ü Language competence: texts reading understanding. Vocabulary learning. Public expression and social interaction developing the final task.
ü Learning to learn competence : working in groups.
ü Citizenship competence: knowing other cultures and respecting them.
Evaluation
We will evaluate the unit using the following criteria
- The student knows the political characteristics of Middles Age.
- The student is able of place the feudalism in space time line.
- The student recognizes the different classes of medieval society and the function of each one.
We will use the observation of daily work in class, rubrics and task evaluation as instrument.
