First degree equation

FIRST DEGREE EQUATION
Esta Unidad Didáctica va dirigida a alumnos de 2º de la ESO y en ella aprenderemos a resolver ecuaciones de primer grado y a usar estas ecuaciones para plantear y resolver problemas de nuestro día a día.

1. Learning outcomes / Evaluation criteria
  1. To be able to solve first degree equations
  2. To be able to translate written problems about daily life into algebraic language
  3. To be able to analyze and check the results obtained in solving a problem using equations
2. Subject Content
  • Algebraic equality
  • Equation
  • Unknown of an equation
  • Degree of an equation
  • Solution of an equation
  • Solving first degree equation
  • Equivalent equation
  • Problems solving
3. Language Content / Communication
Vocabulary
Reuse vocabulary
  • Nouns: Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, Division, brackets, expression, formula, solution,, term, sign, numerator, denominator, common denominator,...

  • Verbs: to add, to subtract, to multiply, to divide, to calculate, to correct,...

  • Expressions: equals, divided by,...

New vocabulary
  • Nouns: equation, unknown, variable, value, first member, second member, solution,...

  • Verbs: solve, clear, to solve for, to assigns value, to check,...
Nouns, verbs and adjectives enough to understand the formulation of different  problems.
Structure
Routines

"Open your books on page...", "Do the exercises...", "Have you done your homework?", "Any doubts?",... "Remember to check the result of the equation","Can you correct this on the blackboard?", "How can we solve this equation?", "What does this expression mean?",...

Grammar contents

Present and future simple, going to, Zero and first conditional

Classroom management

"Can you repeat that, please ?", "What´s the meaning of…?" "Speak louder, please", "Can I go to the toilet, please?", "Be quiet", "Write in pencil/pen...",...

Discourse types

Mainly exposition/exhibition discourse (writing on the blackboard / PDI).

Exhibition of videos to explain at least one content per DU.

Also other types of discourse: promoting argument (teacher vs pupils), facilitating cooperation (students with each other.)

Lenguages kills

Social interaction, listening and speaking.

4. Contextual (cultural) elements

Students already know all types of operations with all numbers (N, Z, Q and R) and previously this DU has learnt the concept of algebraic expression. They will discover how to use this concept to solve daily problems using first degree equations.

5. Cognitive (thinking) processes

  • Reminding: They will remind basic operations with numbers

  • Understanding: They will understand new contents about the first degree equation.

  • Applying: They will apply their knowledge by doing activities and solving problems.

6. a) Task/s
  • Knowing different concepts related with equations (first member, second member, unknown, degree equations, solution,...).

  • Knowing how to use transposition of terms.

  • Solving first degree equations.

  • Checking solutions of an equation.

  • Finding the correct algebraic expression for a real situation.

  • Creating equations to solve maths and daily problems.

6. b) Activities
  1. To start: a little exercise to practise with the vocabulary.

  2. Transpositions of terms: Video1 and Video2

  3. Solving first degree equation: students will have to correct equations on the blackboard talking in english what are they doing

  4. Solving maths and daily problems: Students will have to understand, create an equation for each problem and solve different problems using an online dictionary if it's necessary.

  5. Final Quizziz to review the acquired knowledge.

  6. Final test to evaluate the acquired knowledge

7. Methodology

Organization and class distribution / timing

We will use 10 sessions with 55' per session. In each session we will do:

  • 20' Homework revision.

  • 20' Teacher's explanation of the content.

  • 15' Exercises with the new content: individual and collective.

Session 1

  • Reminding some important vocabulary for this DU

  • Activity: To start

Session 2 to 8

  • Explaining contents from point 2.

  • Doing exercises to improve knowledge.

  • Activities 2,3 and 4 from 6b.

Session 9

  • Final Quizziz

Session 10

  • Final test

Sometimes students will work in pairs to do exercises.

Resources / Materials

  • Blackboard and digital board

  • Notebook

  • Teacher notes

  • Videos

  • Laptops

  • Maths dictionary

Key Competences
  • Mathematical competence and basic competences in science and technology.

  • Learning to learn.

  • Digital competence.

  • Communication in foreign languages.

  • Social and civil competences.

8. Evaluation (criteria and instruments)
  • Attitude and class work. (10%)

  • Notebook: ordered, complete, clean and corrected. (10%)

  • Final test. (80%)
