
THE ORCHESTRA
INTRODUCCIÓN
La siguiente Unidad Didáctica, perteneciente a la materia de Música, está pensada para 1º de ESO. En ella se aprenderá todo lo necesario para conocer las secciones de una orquesta, profundizar sobre los instrumentos que la conforman y las personas que pertenecen a la misma.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
• To know the four sections of the orchestra: brass, windwood, strings and percussion
• To classify and locate the main instruments into each section.
• To distinguish the sound of main instruments of the orchestra
• To know the main roles in a music production
SUBJECT CONTENT
• Characteristics of the orchestra and its four sections
• Instruments: how they produce sound, their materials and their appearance.
• Instrument families.
• The roles of the orchestra: composer, conductor, concertino, chef section.

1. Vocabulary
1.1. Nouns: string section, woodwind section, brass section, percussion section, violin, viola, cello, double bass, harp, trumpet, trombons, tuba, french horn, flute, piccolo, oboe, basoon, clarinet, timpani, cymbals, maracas, castanets, piano, tambourine, xylophone, conductor, composer, musician, player, scene, score.
1.2. Verbs: play, make, belong, compose, stroke, blow, hit, spell, call, create...
1.3. Adjectives: long, short, narrow, thick, big, small, high, low.
2. Structures
Comparatives, "X are made of...", "You play... by...", "X belongs to...", "It is called...", "This music was compossed by...", "How do you play...?", "Do you have any example of a… instrument?", "What is this instrument called?", "What family does... belong to?"
3. Discourse type
Questioning: asking and answering questions. Speaking spontaneously. Exposition. Description.
4. Language Skills
Reading, listening, speaking and internet searching.
CONTEXTUAL (CULTURAL) ELEMENTS
To know what an orchestra is, what sections it has and what kind of instruments belong to each section, in order to make conscience about the contribution of the orchestra on the creation of culture.

TASK AND ACTIVITIES
1. Task
The students will make a presentation and speech. They will choose one of the folowing topics:
· One section of the orchestra
· One family instruments
· History of a famous orquestra
2. Activities

Distribution of a glossary with vocabulary that students will need (5')
Distribution of "The four sections" worksheet, assistence with the reading and its vocabulary (20')

Semantic map on the blackboard with information related to the four Instrument families (10')
Distribution of "strings and woodwinds" worksheet → Listening activities (15')
Writing a text about the woodwind family (15')
Distribution of "The instruments" worksheet. → pair work, speaking activity (20')
LESSON 3:
